Art Workshops on the River
(or in the studio depending on weather)

We meet on location or in the studio to work from life. Any skill level welcome. Bring a sketch pad or your favorite medium and join us in learning how to look a little closer at the world through squinted eyes.

I am offering a five day painting workshop from July 31 - August 4, 2017 from 9 am - 5 pm for $600.00 per student.

This workshop will explore the lower Connecticut River Valley's landscape, it’s architecture and the light that reveals it through a combination of one shot "alla prima" paintings and by further developing other canvases over the course of several days, all on location in the open air.

I work in oil paint and am familiar with other mediums such as pencil, pastel, watercolor and acrylics so please bring what you are comfortable using. Subjects may include painting the Village of Chester, my studio garden (possibly with a live model) and the Connecticut River.

Throughout each day I will provide a variety of tips and suggestions from setting up ones equipment and choosing a composition to learning how to see more through squinted eyes through formal and spontaneous demonstrations and individual discussions. Technical assistance with drawing, perspective, proportions, color mixing and application will be offered as students work on their own paintings.

A general materials and suggested equipment list will be provided upon registration.

Daily schedule:

9 am - noon: Meet at a predetermined location at 9am and work until noon.

noon - 1 pm: Take an hour break for lunch. Students are responsible for providing their own lunch. Chester has a couple of great markets for eating in and take out.

1 pm - 5 pm: Start up again at 1 pm at an agreed upon location and work until 5 pm.

Students are welcome to start earlier and work later if they’d like to without me present.

My wife Caryn and I will host an informal coctail reception at our home and gallery during the week to welcome students, share in lively discussions and to view everyone’s work.

A 50% nonrefundable deposit of $300 is required by June 15th 2017 to secure your place. If I cancel the workshop I will refund your payments in full.

Painting Classes at the Studio:



I am offering painting classes on Saturday afternoons from 1 - 5 pm. at the studio. All skill levels are welcome. We can paint outdoors in good weather or in the studio from life or reference materials if it's too nasty to go out. $200 per session.
